CREVICE CORROSION is a sneaky form of corrosion. The damage occurs out-of-sight and is usually discovered when a machine breaks down or stops working correctly.
During crevice corrosion, metal surfaces are attacked in crevices by a stagnant solution. First, metal components are placed in close contact – for example around the edges of nuts and bolts and sheet metal. Not only can crevice corrosion be be found between metal components, but it can also occur between metal and a nonmetallic components. Next, when debris, and other corrosive substances are deposited between these close surfaces, they create an environment where water will accumulate and corrode the metal component(s). The corrosion damage is seen on the metal parts located in the crevice, and is started by a concentration gradient in chemical and debris laden water.
